Activity Topic: 3 Branches of Government

Matierals: hangers, string, construction paper, hole punch, pictures of executive, legislative, and judicial branch, scissors, and markers

Learning objective: Using hangers, string, construction paper, hole punch, pictures of executive, legislative, and judicial branch (attached), scissors, and markers, the students will create a mobile depiciting the three branches of government, the duties of each branch, the people/groups of people involved in each branch.

Activity Description:
  1. Discuss the three branches of government - the duties of each branch, the people/groups of people involved in each branch. (If necessary for your students, use a graphic organizer to help the students visualize and organize the information.)
  2. Tell students they will be making a mobile about the three branches of government.
  3. Show students a model of the mobile.
  4. Explain how the mobile is constructed.
  5. Write on the board the required elements of the mobile - Title of branch, duty of branch, highest person/group, people involved in those groups (see graphic organizer attachment)
  6. Demonstrate making one element of mobile - Example: Choose executive branch and write executive on piece of construction paper. Punch a hole in the top of the paper. Tie a string in the hole and attach the string to the hanger.
  7. Hand out supplies.
  8. Instruct students to use the supplies to make their mobiles.
  9. Assist students in making their mobiles.

Assessment:
The students will each create their own mobile with the elements required. The teacher will check to make sure all elements are inlcuded in the mobile. See the attached graphic organizer to make sure all elements are included.
